Diocesan Plygain Service -
January 4
Plygain is a Christmas service which at its heart
consists of a number of traditional Welsh carols sung
unaccompanied by small music groups.
Our diocesan Plygain began with a short
service of light. ‘Light’ has been associated with this
service for many centuries. When Plygain services were held
before daybreak on Christmas Day in churches with only limited
lighting, it was sometimes the custom for everyone to bring their own candle.
This led to the church being filled with brilliant light – a worthy
welcome to the Christ-child, ‘the true light which gives
light to everyone’ (John 1:9) who has come into our world.
The service then continued with the traditional carols sung by
the various groups, interspersed with congregational
carols. It ended with the ‘Supper Carol’ which gets its
name
from these words in the last verse: ‘Today is a day of
reconciliation, and supper is ready. The table is set, O let us hurry' and
there was certainly be a welcome cup of tea or coffee and biscuits to
follow the service.
Christmas 2012
The church was beautifully
decorated for Christmas and it was a pleasure to welcome many visitors
to share the worship with us. At the Epiphany services on 6 January the
wise men and their gifts were added to the Nativity scene.
Christmas Fayre
The parish Christmas Fayre on
Saturday 17 November was well attended, with people buying gifts from
the stalls, enjoying refreshments and listening to the Holy Trinity handbell ringers.
